Riley Stewart of Cherry Creek High School and Harrison Witt of Mountain Vista High School have been named Gatorade’s Colorado Track and Field Players of the Year.

Riley Stewart (junior, Cherry Creek H.S.) The 5-foot-11 junior won three individual events at the Class 5A state meet this past season. The state’s reigning Gatorade Player of the Year in girls cross country, Stewart won the 800m in 2:09.60, broke the tape in the 1600m in 4:45.96 and took the 3200m in 10:31.45. She also anchored the victorious 4x800m relay quartet. Stewart’s season-best time of 4:40.66 for the 1 mile broke the Colorado girls state record and nationally was the fifth fastest by a high schooler in 2021. Stewart has maintained a 3.97 GPA in the classroom. She will begin her senior year of high school this fall. A member of her school’s student-athlete leadership council, Stewart has volunteered locally on behalf of park clean-up initiatives. | Harrison Witt (senior, Mountian Vista H.S.) The 6-foot-2, 155-pound senior set a state meet record of 4:04.36 in his title-winning 1600m run at the Class 5A state meet this past season. The clocking ranked as the nation’s No. 4 performance among 2021 prep competitors and is the fastest ever run by a prep on Colorado soil. Witt also broke the tape in the 800 at the state meet with a meet-record time of 1:48.75. His personal-best clocking of 1:48.50 in the 800m this season eclipsed another state soil record and tied the fastest ever run by a Colorado high school athlete. Witt has maintained a weighted 4.34 GPA in the classroom. He will attend Princeton University this fall, where he will compete in track & field. President of his class, Witt has participated in service mission trips to Guatemala and Cuba and has volunteered locally on behalf of the Make-a-Wish Foundation as well as the Forever Home Foundation, which helps elderly community members stay in their homes. |
