Columbine grad Kincaid finishes third.
Sprinting the best off of a slow opening pace, Paul Chelimo of Colorado Springs won the men’s 5,000-meter final at the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials in 13:26.82.
Grant Fisher, 24, second in 13:27.01, and Columbine grad Woody Kincaid, 28, third in 13:27.13, also made the team.
Chelimo, the Olympic silver-medalist in 2016, didn’t race much pre-Trials, in part because he was spending time in Kenya after the death of his brother. But he controlled the race, whether the pace was solid but not fast (the first two kilometers were run at low 13:20s pace for 5K), turgid (there were some middle laps at Chelimo’s half marathon pace), or all-out (the top three ran their final lap in less than 53 seconds).
