A tried and true Pikes Peak veteran and a newbie were the champions in yesterday’s Pike Peak Marathon.
Matt Carpenter, 47, was victorious for the twelfth time in the race’s history. In addition to his Pikes Peak Marathon victories, Carpenter has won the Pikes Peak Ascent 6 times. He holds the course record in both events. Carpenter’s time was 3:48:08. The champion said he had not done many long endurance efforts prior to the race, yet finished with an effortless stride. Daryn Parker took second place for the third year in a row, finishing in 4:01:46. Bernie Boettcher, 48, was third in 4:23:07.
Meanwhile, 33 year old JoAnna Masloski finished with a grin as well as the win in her first race on America’s mountain. Seventeen minutes separated her and the second place female at the summit. Maria Petzold of Eldorado Springs ran a strong downhill narrowing the gap to less than 3 minutes for a second place finish. Thirty year old Andrea Williams, also of Eldorado Springs took the third place spot with a finish time of 5:21:10.
