Coronavirus Prompts Race Cancellations

Many running events have been cancelled or postponed in the past 24 hours. This includes popular events this weekend – the Runnin’ of the Green in Denver, the Highlands Ranch St Patrick’s Day 5K, the Sharin’ O’ the Green in Fort Collins, the St Patrick’s Day 5K in Colorado Springs and the Canyonlands Half Marathon in Moab, Utah.

Organizers of the Runnin’ of the Green posted this release:

“Thank you all for your continued support of the Runnin of the Green. You are what makes this event so unique and fun for all. We appreciate you all more than you can imagine.

It is with great disappointment that we are reaching out to let you know we have made the difficult decision to postpone the event in light of the COVID-19 situation.  Safety is our number one priority and at this time, it is in the best interest of the community. This includes the advance packet pickup at Boulder Running Company on the 13th and 14th.

We will be working with the applicable agencies to determine a future date as soon as possible. As you can imagine their offices are inundated due to the State of Emergency. Once we have more information, we will inform you of the new date and details. Please be patient while we work through that process.”

The HRCA posted this announcement:

“We are aware of the current status of the COVID-19 virus and we want you to know that we are acting with an abundance of care to make our environment as safe as possible for our guests. We are working with our local and national public health care authorities to take proactive measures, especially concerning large gatherings of people.

With that in mind, we have made the difficult decision to cancel the St. Patrick’s Day 5K scheduled for March 14. It saddens us to take this extraordinary measure, but the health and safety of the community are our top priority and the risk level for our audience at this time is too high for us to move forward with this event as scheduled.

Yesterday at packet pick up we had over 500 people pick up their packets. For those who were unable to attend, we are determining the best way to get you your packet and t-shirt, but know that we will do so in the coming days. We are exploring other ways to make this race cancellation up to you and will keep you up to date as we have more information to share. Thank you for your understanding and support.”

If you are uncertain of the status of a race that you have planned for the weekend, check the race website or email that race organizer directly.
