The Pikes Peak Marathon is known for it’s high-altitude challenge with runners ascending to the peak’s 14,115-foot summit before returning to Manitou Springs. But the warm August sun took its toll on everyone, including women’s winner Anita Ortiz, 50, of Eagle, Colo. Ortiz hit the finish line in 5 hours and 54 seconds, then found an ice pack for the hot sports. She also set an age-group record for the ascent, covering the 13.32-mile climb in 3:11:05. The win was her second in the marathon. She is a four-time winner of the Pikes Peak Ascent.
