The Vail Recreation District’s 2013 La Sportiva Vail Mountain Trail Running Series, presented by Columbia kicked off with the Boneyard Boogie 10K.

The trail run, which was sponsored by the Dusty Boot, began behind Eagle Valley Middle School at the Bureau of Land Management trailhead, located in the Bluffs neighborhood in Eagle. The trail includeed a switchback singletrack through the wooded BLM area emerging from the trees and into rolling sagebrush fields. Runners encountered some trail splits along the way, plus several short bursting climbs. Once at the top of the climb, the singletrack trail descended to the Eagle Pool and Ice Arena for an extended downhill run to the finish.

There was a $200 cash prize for anyone who could break the course record set by John Tribbia three years ago.  The race came down to a sprint to the finish as Tribbia got a big lead on the last downhill, but Jonny Stevens pushed the rolling flats to the finish for the win, and a new course record of 39:40.  They both broke the old record by over a minute. 50-year-old Andy Ames claimed third in 43:19. Rachel Viele took the female win in 47:03.
