The Pikes Peak Marathon and Ascent are moving to September in 2022. For the first time in its 67-year history, the iconic Colorado races will be held after Labor Day. The new dates are on September 17 and 18, 2022. Organizers say there are several reasons for the change from August.
One is a conflict with the Leadville Trail 100 Run. Another is the general congestion in Manitou Springs area attractions and lodging during the summer.
They also say the region’s weather is traditionally more stable in September than it is in August. Racers in recent years have been fighting through record-setting temperatures, especially in the Marathon. But, as any experienced mountain traveler (and 2018 Ascent racer) knows, August also has more sudden thunderstorms. The average high temperature is 5 degrees lower in September, and the region receives nearly 2 inches less precipitation compared to August.
The change takes the races out of peak tourism season in Manitou Springs, which should alleviate some traffic and lodging congestion, and area attractions will also likely be less crowded.
Registration for all Garden to Peak Challenge series races opens March 1, 2022.
