It was a photo finish in both the men’s and women’s race at the USATF Colorado Trail Championships on Saturday, October 5. In the men’s race, Chandler Reid outsprinted Geoffrey Kipchumba at the finish line, both clocking a 36:48 gun time over the hilly, single track trails. Reid, 24, of Lafayette, and Kipchumba, 31, of Colorado Springs, are both more well known for their accomplishments on the track and roads than in trail races. But with a $2,000 prize purse and a USATF title on the line, the field was stacked for the trail championship.
In 36:54, Zach Perrin took the final prize money spot in third. Brian Llamas and Andy Wacker followed. Eric Monda of Highlands Ranch took the top masters spot in 40:43 in 14th overall.
In the women’s 10K championship trail race, Ivy Kibet took the crown over her twin sister Elvin Kibet, both in 41:36. Ashley Brasovan took third in 43:24. Molly Callahan and Jessica Burke were close behind.
The USATF race was held in conjunction with the Castle Rock Trail Festival, a day of fun at Philip Miller Park in Castle Rock, south of Denver. The Festival held a 50K, marathon, half marathon, 10K, 5K, and a family adventure run obstacle course race. More than 900 athletes participated in the events.
