Product Review: Pearl Izumi PRO cycling jersey and bib short

As a runner, we are keen to hit the pavement with two feet. However, the longer we pound it out, the more likely we are to get injured. To prevent, it is best to find a way to maintain fitness without the pounding. The best way to do this is on a bike. You can cover more ground, go super fast, sweat like crazy and not pound the pavement.

Over the years, I have added more and more cycling to my training regime, so much so that I have even competed in multiple triathlons (though when you see me in the water, you might think I am crazy).

When I first started cycling, I couldn’t believe the cost of the gear (not including the bike). There are helmets, riding kits, shoes, gloves and even little hats to keep the perspiration out of your eyes. Initially, I would always buy the cheapest items. But, as time went on and I began riding more often and for longer periods of time, I began to upgrade to some of the higher end clothing.

My latest kit is the new Pearl Izumi PRO jersey and bib short. What makes this kit a step above is the quality of the material the construction. The jersey is made with Pearl’s PRO Transfer In-R-Cool® fabrics for lightning fast dry times. The sleeves are a bit longer than normal, which I personally like as it looks better and helps with sun protection. Also, the jersey has six pockets on the back instead of the standard three, which allows for more places to store stuff when on a longer ride (jacket, food, etc…).

The main features of the jersey are as follows:

  • PRO Transfer In-R-Cool® fabric for optimal moisture transfer and dry time
  • Bonded sleeve, hem and pocket construction for minimal fit and feel
  • Rotated sleeve construction for on the bike comfort
  • Direct-Vent open mesh side panels add breathability and ventilation
  • Five rear pockets plus zippered security pocket provide plenty of storage for hours in the saddle
  • Full-length semi-auto lock zipper can be flipped up and pulled open with one hand for easy venting
  • 50+ UPF rating
  • BioViz® reflective elements for low-light visibility

The matching short/bib short might just be the most comfortable bike shorts I have ever worn. They paired their most supportive and breathable PRO Escape 1:1® Chamois with luxurious Italian PRO Transfer fabric which just feels like silk on your skin. There are only seven panels, which cuts down on the seams. Wide, laser cut bib straps eliminate the need for additional binding for a barely there, yet supportive fit. Plus, the 10’5″ inseam is perfect for all rides.

The main features of the bib short are as follows:

  • Luxurious Italian PRO Transfer fabric provides balanced compression for ultimate comfort
  • PRO Escape 1:1® Chamois with floating top sheet design delivers unmatched comfort
  • Seven panel design minimizes seams and maximizes body contouring fit
  • Laser cut leg openings with silicone leg grippers for a seamless transition to skin
  • Laser cut bib straps provide superior next to skin comfort and a low profile feel
  • BioViz® reflective elements for low-light visibility
  • 10.5” inseam

While, the technical jargon may sound neat, the most important things is how they work. I wore this kit for the Triple Bypass ride in July (120 miles with 10,000+ feet of climbing) and I had no issues with rubbing or saddle sores. The kit stayed perfectly in place, especially on the fast descents. I had a ton of storage for the awesome Honey Stinger waffles given out at the aid stations. And, the wicking of the fabric was spot on.

While the kit itself is pricey at $350 ($200 for the bib short and $150 for the jersey), I would highly recommend this luxurious outfit for your cycling gear. It will last forever and is definitely worth the price.
