The fifth annual Home for the Holidays 5K was a huge success Saturday morning as record numbers of participants and spectators alike came out to City Park to raise awareness and funds for the Colorado Coalition for the Homeless.
Chilly early morning temperatures didn’t stop almost 700 participants from toeing the line of the event. A kids fun run took place preceding the 5K, and a stocked vendor village with food, beverages and more greeted everyone that crossed the line.
The men’s race was a battle for first through fourth place, with Boulder’s Mark Del Monaco taking the close win in 17:05. Only seconds separated second through fourth place, with Sean McNeil of Littleton finishing second in 17:12, Westminster’s Omar Martinez finishing third in 17:13, and 17-year old Chris Retzlaff finishing fourth in 17:14.
The women’s race was not as close, but saw the top three finishers going under 20 minutes for some speedy top times. Jessica Harper of Lone Tree grabbed top honors in 19:11, with 19-year old Elena Gomez finishing just after Harper in 19:24. Rounding out the top three was Broomfield’s Annie Howley in 19:34.
