The Weather Gods were smiling down on Washington Park last Sunday, as the 2nd annual Fit for Fire 5K was held in pristine Fall temperatures with a cool breeze and no lack of sunshine. The event drew around 500 participants, almost doubling their numbers from last year while benefiting Denver Firefighters. Immediately following the kid’s race, the 5k race began at the sound of the siren – literally – as one of Denver’s police officers lead the race on his motorcycle, bringing in the winner, Matt Batliner in 17:09. Second place Scott Tucker came in at 17:56, with third place John Costello hot on his heels, coming in at 18:01. The women’s race was lead by 14-year old Erica Jeff, with a time of 22:03. Second and third place finishers Micol Rothman-Haji and Megan Miccio came in at 23:07 and 23:15. The Fit for Fire 5k is quickly becoming a local race favorite, benefiting a great local cause and drawing enthusiastic runners and walkers alike.
