Former Manitou Springs resident Scott Gall won the Barr Trail Mountain Race on Saturday, July 16th. The 37-year-old took the lead at the 2-mile mark and held off Manitou Springs’ Daryn Parker (1:40:24), running 1:39:02. John Tribia of Boulder finished third in 1:41:48.

The women’s race promissed to be exciting with course record holder Brandy Erholtz of Evergreen battling fellow mountain running team member Megan Kimmel of Silverton. But Kimmel dropped out, and Erholtz struggled to a third-place finish. That allowed Stevie Kremer of Crested Butte, last years runner up at the Imogene Pass Run and current course record holder at the Greenland 25K to cruise to victory. She finished in 1:51:58. Rachael Cuellar of Albuqurque, also a former mountain team member, finished second.

One thing that makes the Barr Trail Mountain Race different from most events is that it donates 100% of the entry fees to charities. This year, they donated $5,700 to various local charities. The race also has a high school challenge where area high school cross country teams set up and staff the aid stations. Runners then vote for their favorites at the end of the race. This year, The Classical Academy took top honors and earned $2,250 for their cross country and track and field programs.
