Andrew Letherby and Sara Slattery were the winners of the 27th annual Emerald Nuts Midnight Run in New York City’s Central Park, a four mile road race which went off at the stroke of midnight to ring in the New Year.

Letherby, an Australian citizen who lives in Boulder, Colo., crossed the finish line in 18 minutes and 44 seconds for his first win at this event. American steeplechaser Steve Slattery, also of Boulder, who passed two other runners late in the race, finished second in 18:52 while New Zealander John Henwood finished third, just two seconds behind Slattery.

Slattery’s wife Sara won the women’s race in a quick 21:36, the second fastest time ever recorded at the event. She crossed the finish line on the 72nd Street transverse 57 seconds ahead of second place Alemtsehay Misganaw, an Ethiopian who lives in New York City. Laura Bloedorn was third in 23:08.

Both Letherby and Slattery earned $500 in prize and bonus money.

The race was produced by the New York Road Runners and normally draws over 5000 entrants.
